This is one of the best-preserved Moorish walled castles with several towers still standing; this defensive structure dates from the eleventh century. During the fifteenth century almost the whole city’s population lived within the castle grounds, which is why mosques and palaces were built in the interior, such as the Palace of the Counts of the Rock, which currently houses the Archeological Museum. It’s located on José Álvarez Plaza and Sáez de Buruaga (no street number).

This symbol of Badajoz is situated across from Palmas Bridge (Puente de Palmas) on the banks of the Guadiana River. In its time, it was the gateway to the city, and then in the nineteenth century it was converted into a royal prison. It is considered the most beautiful monument of Badajoz. The Badajoz Office of Tourism is located in the lower part of one of the towers.

This building originated in the sixteenth century and has a façade that exhibits various shields and crests. The interior has access to Scarecrow Tower (la Torre del Espantapájaros).
