Dive in to Dutch history and come and visit the megalithic tombs in Emmen. Built from 3450 to around 3250 BC. Spectacular monument which is still in very good condition. Surrounded by the beautiful countryside, you will find a long grave in Emmen on Schimmeres. Long tombs consists of two dolmens with a cover hill on top. The long barrow is a unique type of dolmen which only has one of its kindin the Netherlands, which is found in Emmen.
Nature and art combined together into a spectacular art project by American artist Robin Smithson located in Emmen. The Broken Circle is a flattened piece of land on the edge of a lake. It is shaped, as the name says, as a broken circle. In the center of the circle there is a large stone that was discovered during the making of the Broken Circle. Initially, the American artist wanted to remove the stone, but he changed his mind later. According to him, the stone gives the work a special character, since these are the type of stones that were used for the making of the dolmens. Besides the Broken Circle in the water, they"ve built a hill with a diameter of 23 meters. The Spiral Hill stands as a parody of the tower of Babylon. On top of the Spiral Hill you have a magnificent view of the Broken Circle and the surrounding nature. It is definitely worth to come and see the Spiral Hill.
The Veenpark open-air museum is located near the village Barger-Compascuum. Unfortunately the museum is not located in Emmen, but with a coach or bus, you can easily drive to the nearby village and visit the open air museum. The museum was built in 1966 in honor of the centenary of the licorice Barger - Compascuum . In the Veenpark you will find a few settlements that have been reconstructed. In the village you find a pub, a church, a school, a mill, a blacksmith shop and bakery. Also, it is possible to get a tour in the Veenpark. The Veenpark is open from 29th March to 27th October. For a day of relaxation, you can come to the swimming and wave pool Aquarena. There are various activities to do for different visitors. For the younger visitor, there is disco swimming and for the older group there is Aqua Jogging or aquazumba. Plenty of choice for young and old. The aquarena is open on Monday / Thursday from 11:00 to 20:30 , Friday from 11:00 to 21:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 until 16:45. Admission is € 4.95 per person.
Though Emmen is not the largest shopping paradise in the Netherlands, there are plenty of nice shops in the City Centre every day to get through.
