This monastery is of special interest due to the important sites that surround it and because Columbus" voyages were planned here. For many years Huelva Port was the port of entry for ships bearing goods from the West Indies.
Take a tour through the city"s historic district around the emblematic Plaza de la Merced where you"ll find the city"s most famous monuments, which makes this an ideal walk for people who are interested in culture and art. You"ll also want to see the archeological area called Cabezo de San Pedro, which has also been declared a Cultural Interest Heritage. In the middle of the historic district, next to the remains of the medieval castle, you will find Saint Peter"s Church (la Iglesia de San Pedro), the oldest temple in the city, which dates from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The best views of Huelva are from the beautiful baroque Cathedral Our Lady of Mercy (Nuestra Señora de la Merced), which has been declared a Cultural Interest Heritage and National Monument, and The Church of Our Lady of the Conception (la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción), which has also been declared a Cultural Interest Heritage and which dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.
You can take a coach downtown to El Parque Natural Marismas de Odiel, a park where you can admire the flora and fauna of the area and practice sports, such as hiking. The city also offers other very attractive green areas in the form of parks and gardens spread throughout the city.

This is one of the symbols of Huelva; it’s dedicated to Christopher Columbus and is located at the confluence of the Odiel and Tinto Rivers. The figure of Columbus stands upon a pedestal that has bas reliefs representing the Aztec, Incan, Mayan, and Christian cultures along with some commemorative plaques. Altogether, the monument is 37 meters (120 feet) tall. This monument was done in the cubist style by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1929.
Built in the classic-style at the beginning of the twentieth century, this building is located on Mora Claros Street, which is one of the pedestrian streets in downtown Huelva. The décor is made of gypsum and plaster of Paris, and the balconies are glazed with a wrought iron structure. This beautiful building is a marvel to behold. On the upper floor, which is well-lit thanks to a glass dome, the entire interior is in the modernist style and is decorated with glazed tiles and plasterwork of different designs.
A sumptuous and emblematic building erected at the turn of the twentieth century on Puerto Street, near Mora Claros Palace. It features two huge towers on the sides, beautiful glazed balconies that jut out to form a semicircle. This building could be described as having a classical style with touches of modernism and influences from French art nouveau.
Situated on De los Marismeños Street, this is an ideal place for enjoying a fresh beer with a good plate of Huelva shrimp at a very decent price. Chow down on a scrumptious shrimp salad or enjoy any of the other house specialties, such as prawns, salted tuna, tuna roe (similar to caviar), ham, or lobster.
The production line entered service in 1967. This refinery, the port facilities of which store and distribute gasoline, butane, propane, diesel, and asphalt, occupies an area of 2.4 million square meters (26 million square feet). It’s colossal! Visit it in the late afternoon and as night falls you’ll be in for a real treat. Tall smokestacks shoot fire heavenward, metal structures are illuminated by thousands of lights, and a veritable sea of cement makes visitors feel tiny in comparison.
