Mole Antonelliana and the History of Cinema

One of the most symbolic buildings of Turin, this 163 m high tower was designed by Architect Antonello in the XIX century (after whom the name of Mole Antonelliana), originally as a synagogue placed in the Jewish district of the city, and finished with the actual Christian symbols. Due to this “change of route”, the tower started with an square plant and finished with a pyramidal shape crowned by a spire at the top. The Mole hosts one of the most visited Museums of Torino: the National Museum of Cinema, with a permanent exhibition about the history of Cinema and cinematographic techniques. Get lost among original costumes and recreations of the most famous cinema sets. Even if the ticket price is a bit high (€9,00), it’s worth a visit. Further to the museum, the Mole offers the chance to take the panoramic lift to the top of the tower and enjoy a 360° view of Turin. The National Museum of Cinema opens from Tuesday to Sunday 9.00 to 20.00 (Saturday until 23.00), it’s closed on Monday. Tell the driver of your rented minibus to drop you off in Via Po crossing Via Montbello, it will take you a couple of minutes to reach the Mole on foot. As via Po is within the limited traffic zone (ZTL), ask the bus driver to come back and collect you at a certain time later on.

Egyptian Museum

Third in the world (in Egyptology) just after Cairo and London, the Egyptian Museum of Turin exhibits in 8 well defined thematic areas the Egyptian traditions and uses, religion, funerary art, textile and paper manufactures, painting and much more .

Walk under the starry night of the “Sala stellata”, among the statues of Tutankhamen III, Amenhotep II or Ramses II; Travel back in time and discover ancient objects originally used by Egyptian in their lives, and take part (if you are lucky with the programmed schedule) in one of the archaeological laboratories. The Museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 to 19.30 in Via Accademia delle Scienze 6. Your hired coach can’t access this “walking-only” part of the center so ask your driver to bring you to the upper part of via Roma and walk from there to the Museum through via Maria Vittoria.

The Po river, Borgo Medioevale and Castle at the Valentino Park

River Po flows to the eastside of Turin, passing through one of the most beautiful and well known green areas: the Valentino park. Next and part of this park, il Borgo Medioevale (the middle age village) reproduces different medieval typologies of buildings which really exist and are spread over Piedmont region (and the neighbouring Val d’Aosta Region). Entering the village through the drawbridge or arriving by boat in a Po excursion, you and your group can enjoy an afternoon in this complex and even find an old style print-shop and buy an image of ancient Turin to bring home as a souvenir! As you can easily spend 4-5 hours in this area, tell your bus or minibus driver to take some time off and come back at the agreed time to pick you up.

Torino is considered to be part of a magic triangle together with Prague and Lyon, a place where white and black magic meet; if you like such esoteric themes, there are many symbols in the city than can be visited during one of the night excursions organized twice a week (Thursday and Saturday) by a local tour operator called “Somewhere”. From 21.00 and for a couple of hours your group will be led through underground passages and ancient meeting crypts. The Shroud of Turin

Even if you are not a religious type or not Catholic, take the chance to spend one hour to learn a bit about the well-known Shroud of Turin, a 4x1 m linen sheet supposed to be the shroud with which Christ was wrapped to be buried. The “original” is kept in the Cathedral out of reach, only a replica is shown to public. Your bus can park next to the Royal Gardens (Giardini Reali), as the Cathedral is next to the Royal Palace.

There is moreover a small laboratory in the crypt of a church in Via San Domenico 28- only 10 minutes walking from the Cathedral – with an interesting display about the research developed during centuries on the authenticity of the shroud. Reasons why it could really be or not the mortuary sheet of Christ from the scientific point of view… il Museo della Sindone (Museum of the Shroud) opens from 9.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 19.00. Your coach or minibus can park nearby in Corso Regina Margherita.

Where else if not in Turin could be based the National Automobile Museum? Turin is the city in which the industry of Italian automobile design and production was born with the Agnelli family and FIAT company. In the MAUTO, visitors can travel along the past 150 years of history through the evolution of the automobile. The MAUTO has been named Traveller’s Choice 2014 according to Tripadvisor users,so it’s probably worth a visit. It’s in Corso Unità d’Italia, right in front of Valentino Park and the Po, so you can combine your stop here with the Mediaeval Village. Your minibus can wait for you in one of the specific areas within the park, and come to collect you once you finish.

When moving round the center of Turin ask the driver of your rented minibus or bus to park in one of the big parking areas dedicated to tourists and groups (the park next to Po, the Royal Gardens, etc…) . Turin is very concerned to pollution reduction for which transit to certain areas is forbidden or reduced at certain times and in any case, if the weather is nice it’s worth a walk. You will be able to discover many other interesting points further to those listed above. Minibus will be useful to move from one city side to another, as Turin is quite vast, but once parked in a certain area your driver can wait for you while you enjoy your visit on foot and then transport your group again towards another attraction.

If you don’t have much time, though, it would be a nice idea to rent a bus with driver or a minibus in case you are part of a small group. There are really many things to see in Turin and an experienced transport company will make the difference. If you think you would like to spend some time as well around the region of Piedmont you will find other suggestions in our Turin province page.

What to see and what to do in Turin City:

Further to the many city tours to entertain yourself and delight your senses, there are a few local traditions you must follow if you are in Turin.

Turin is the birthplace of aperitif (aperitivo in Italian), over 200 years old. Even the king Vittorio Emanuele used to enjoy frequently a Vermouth, born under the arches of Piazza Castello as an aromatized white wine.

Since then many aperitif producers developed their own recipes: Mr. Martini in society with Mr. Rossi for example, invented a mix of sweet wine with cinnamon and other spices become famous worldwide… Or Mr. Cinzano, who produced right in via Garibaldi (100 m from the palace) his typical red vermouth.

If you want to take part in this tradition, start at any lounge bar in piazza Vittorio Veneto, heart of the movida in Turin, and save the afternoon to go to the Quadrilatero Romano (Roman Quadrilateral), ancient heart of the roman Turin.

By the way, Torino (Turin) means “small bull”; It is most probably that you will find the image of the standing animal which is the emblem of the city in many different contexts, from some monuments to the logo of the local soccer team. For example, many public fountains in Turin drop water from a small bull’s mouth!

If you go for your last expresso before leaving the city center, save it until you arrive to Piazza San Carlo, which splits in two parts the commercial Via Roma. Old times café- and tea rooms like café San Carlo will bring you back in time. And don’t forget to look for the bronze bull on the entrance floor and be sure to step on … it’s attributes… if you want to return to Turin! Ok, that’s just a popular saying, but who goes to Rome and doesn’t throw a coin into the Fontana de Trevi?

Maybe if you are lucky you will be able to attend a football derby between the two city teams: Juve vs. Torino (also called Toro by its followers); otherwise you can always enjoy a match Juventus against any other Italian team, don’t miss the national sport!

What to see and what to do in Piedmont

When you are making itinerary choices for a group holiday planning Piedmont you might want to seek some advice. How to deal with unexpected problems and how to maximise your quality time as much as possible. When touring around the Piedmont region just make sure to contract a local private transport provider with a local Italian chauffeur. This will add value as he’ll show you’re the hidden spots and can advice you about the tough choices between trips to the beautiful Val d"Aosta, visits to a national park as the Gran Paradiso or the possibility of enjoying a gastronomic and oenological route around Le Langhe hills.
