Taxis and Cabs in Jaipur City: comparison and prices in Jaipur

Are you ready for the Pink City? Jaipur is one of India"s main tourist destinations and there are a number of taxi services specialising in services for tourists. The roads can be manic and over-crowded but the city is manageable compared with Delhi or Mumbai.

With a lot of taxis and taxi companies focusing on tourists there is a lot of choice for tourists. However, there are a lot of scams you should be aware of.

Private taxis / minicabs

Private taxis can be a variety of vehicles from Tata Indicas to Toyota Corollas or more luxury vehicles. When you pre book a taxi in Jaipur you will be told the registration plate of the vehicle picking you up. Many taxi companies offer full and multi-day hire so you can see all the different sights in Jaipur. Like Pitambra Tours and Travels on Gurjar Ki Thadi, City Cabs on Siyaram Street, or Pavan Jangid Metro Cabs on Kissan Marg.

This is the safest and most convenient method of taking a taxi in Jaipur, especially as you will not have to negotiate a fare. When you pre book you can either agree a price in advance, or agree that the taxi driver will use his metre. It should be around €1 for 4-5 kilometres, but significantly more if you pre book a luxury vehicle.

Flagged Down Taxis

Some taxis are painted green and yellow but not all. However, you can distinguish taxis by their registration plate which will be yellow with black letters. When taking a taxi without pre booking you must negotiate a fare with the driver. Do not accept the driver"s offer of going to a gem or souvenir shop, this is a scam.

Tuctucs / Auto Rickshaws

India wouldn"t be the same without three wheeled scooters taking people around. You will see them everywhere in Jaipur and are generally safe, even though they don"t look it. It"s best to use tuctucs for short (2-3km) journeys. Again you will have to negotiate, but these are around half the price of a flagged down taxi.

Top tips for getting a taxi in Jaipur

Avoiding scams:

In Jaipur there are a number of scams concerning drivers taking you to a gem or souvenir shop, or befriending you and taking you to a bar with expensive beer. The drivers are working on commission and you will certainly not be taken to a place with genuine gems. The easiest way to avoid these scams are to simply refuse. Especially with flagged down taxis, drivers can be very pushy, so stay firm and say no.

Negotiating:

As a major tourist hub taxi drivers have learnt that they can get paid more by negotiating a price than using the metre. In Jaipur drivers will start astronomically high with their prices. The best tactic is to say no and walk away. The driver will come after you and rapidly decrease his opening offer. If the driver doesn"t follow you it usually means he was offering a fair price.

Going between attractions:

Outside the main attractions there will be a line of taxi drivers convincing you it"s too far to walk to your next attraction even though you"ve been told it"s very close. As a general rule ignore these taxi drivers and walk. Better still, pre book a car with driver or taxi for a full day to avoid the constant hassle.

Avoiding unregistered taxis:

In Jaipur there is a problem with unregistered taxis offering services to tourists. While they will offer cheaper prices with taxis you are best avoiding.

Where to find taxis and cabs in Jaipur

When taking a taxi in Jaipur it"s best to use a designated taxi stand. The main ones are outside the large hotels, big tourist attractions, and Jaipur Railway Station.
