Berlin has two airports and flights arrive in this city from all over the world. 30 years ago you would be landing in a different country dependent on whether you arrived in Tegel or Schonofeld Airport, but today both are accessible entry points to Berlin. Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) is the busier airport and is in the west, located on an old Prussian hunting ground. It"s just 8km (20minutes) from the city centre. Berlin Schonofeld Airport (SXF) is on the old Soviet military airport and is 18km from the city centre. Both airports are a little run down, particularly as they are due to be replaced by the forthcoming Berlin Brandenburg (BER) airport.
With both airports you"ve got the same options for getting to the city centre.
The most convenient airport transfer is by a pre booked taxi and a number of companies specialise in this service. For an additional cost they will provide a meet and greet service, or you can meet your driver at a pre-arranged meeting point at the airport. This service allows you to choose between a fleet of vehicles for your transfer. Germany is at the heart of the automobile industry so you"ll have the opportunity to travel in real luxury for a low price.
As a general guide a pre booked transfer will cost around €50 from Schonofeld and €30 from Tegel. You can expect an experienced English speaking driver who will also provide some information on the monuments you are passing. You can compare quotes and book your airport transfer with our easy to use tool. We list companies like Berlin Airport Transfers on Leibnizstraße 57 and Blacklane at Core Tex Records 25.
Companies that provide airport transfers can also provide luxury minivans which are perfect for a group arriving in Berlin. These are often only a little more expensive than a 4 seater vehicle. Forget your images of cramped minivans, the Germans know how to combine space and luxury with their minibuses.
Coach rental is popular in Berlin and many companies offer airport transfers to large groups. Expect to pay around €250 – 300 to either airport for a large coach from anywhere in Berlin.
When landing in either of Berlin"s airports you can follow the signs for taxis. Fifty years ago you could have been following signs to a military air field where war planes awaited. Today it"s just 4 seater taxis who all use a metre for your transfer to the city centre. You may have to wait in line during busy periods.
Both airports are connected by public transport, although Schonofeld is the only airport on the metro line. Many visitors have fallen for the mistake of taking a metro to Tegel Railway station, only to find it"s a suburban village nowhere near the airport. From Tegel the best option is to first take a bus and then change to the metro.
